Works for Septemeber

Two scenes of my road - one on the way to the house - the other from my front verandah.  Really enjoying perspective and composition (as usual).  The picture on the left has been entered in the 'Talls' exhibition at Riverbank Gallery - Canowindra.

Details of new Bournewood Paintings

"Remember that before being a war-horse, a nude woman, or some anecdote, a picture is essentially a plane surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order."  Maurice Denis

Have started a new series of paintings of the Bournewood landscape. Will post them as they are finished.  Here is a little preview.....

"For me the subject of a picture and its background have the same value. Neither is more important than the other.  Only the composition, the general pattern counts"  Henri Matisse

Yeoval buildings

'Yeoval Convent' Acrylic 2010.  This is one grand building, built in about 1920, it looks very out of place like an old spanish mission.

'Coolah Woolshed' Acrylic 2010.  This old beauty is over 150 years old.  I can see it from my kitchen window.  I love the feel and smell of the old wood and a century of use.

Some works inspired by Biblical references

Ezekiel is a fantastic book, this is my interpretation of Ezekiel's vision of the throne of God, looks quite scarey, but I'm sure the true throne is quite spectacular and very beautiful. This was drawn in Charcoal on Stonehenge in 1992 (I think).

'David Dances' 1992 Mixed Media on Paper
This was drawn during my 'anatomy' phase. I was enjoying the story of David dancing before the people in his birthday suit - happy down to his bones!

'Trinity' 1998 Acrylic on canvas
Trying to find a way to paint the three personalities of the Godhead, if you look close you can see the dove in the white squares overlaying the red earth of creation - the Creator Father - and the red line that continues past the frame -  the neverending love of Christ Jesus.

'Testimony' (Part4) Charcoal on Stonehenge
This is a panel in a much larger work, using Renaissance symbolism and my own salvation story - I will try to post the other panels when I can .

'Angels' Charcoal on paper 1992
This is from a sketch book - I was (and am) very interested in angelology - trying to see past the mythological creature with the harp - cheesy smile and big wings - to read what has actually been written about them. The majestic creatures they actually are - neither male or female - and much more aweinspiring and powerful than we could believe, angels arn't to be taken lightly.

Some Pastel Excercises

Pastel Study - Knee 1992
Had a great time in 1992 drawing various parts of the body from anatomy books, enjoying each body part as an 'art object',  bones are especially beautiful things to draw.

Two pastel studies done for one of my pastel classes, to show students how they can 'free-up' with their style.  Always the enemy of meticulous detail! :)

Three Life drawing studies done in 1988, I really enjoyed life drawing, the body has beautiful lines and is so changeable.

Some Mixed Media works

Just love the freedom of mixed media and collage, chuck out the rules and explore!

'What I See Around Me' (Mixed Media, 1991)

'Angels' (Mixed Media 1992)

Mixed Media excercise 1994

Some Celtic Christian Art

The Celtic Saints - Large banners made up of 4 laminated panels - charcoal drawings.
Patrick - Bridget - Columba - Aidan
Drawn 1997.
Large banner (2m x 4m) for Conference, detailed painted knotwork on canvas.

Broken Hill Buildings

Barney's House (painted c.1995)  Acrylic on board

Kinchega Wool Sheds (drawn c.2000) Charcoal on paper

Old Miners Cottage - Thomas Street            Old Stone Shed - Williams Street Broken Hill
(Both drawn in pastel c.2004)

Broken Hill landscape -trees

Another  thing I love to paint is the lines created by trees in creek beds and in the desert, the creamy white trunks contrast beautifully with the red sand.
These drawings are a little various views of the beautiful desert trees and their colours at different times of the day.

This drawing was quickly sketched before a storm totally overtook the spot where I was working, the dark sky is incredible and the trees stark ini the light.

These drawings were done at Umberumbeka dam (near Silverton NSW) a nice change to draw near water.

Silverton Buildings

More of Silverton, can't get enough!  These buildings are more substansial and still used today, in contrast to the last post - people are still clinging onto territory from nature.
'Silverton Pub' pastel on Stonehenge 2003

'Catholic Church, Silverton' pastel on paper 2002
